The word autophagy literally means self-eating, and that is exactly what it is: a cell digesting parts of itself on purpose. When proteins clump together too big to handle, when whole structures wear out, or when a starving cell needs to recycle its own materials for raw fuel, autophagy is the housekeeping process that wraps the unwanted cargo up and digests it.

Here is the basic mechanism in plain steps. A flat membrane sheet forms inside the cell and curves around the cargo to be removed — a damaged structure, a clump of proteins, a piece of cytoplasm — eventually sealing it inside a double-membraned bubble called an autophagosome. That bubble then travels to and fuses with a lysosome, the cell's acidic recycling compartment packed with digestive enzymes. Inside, the cargo is broken down into its building blocks — amino acids, fats, sugars — which are released back into the cell to be reused. Some autophagy is bulk and indiscriminate, scooping up whatever is nearby (handy during starvation), while selective autophagy uses tags, including ubiquitin labels and dedicated receptor proteins, to wrap up one specific damaged target such as a broken mitochondrion or a protein aggregate.

Autophagy matters because it is the cell's way of handling exactly the messes the proteasome cannot: large protein aggregates, whole defective organelles, even invading bacteria. It is essential for surviving starvation, for clearing the toxic clumps seen in neurodegenerative disease, and for quality control as cells age — its discovery earned a Nobel Prize, and drugs that tune it are being explored for cancer and aging. Two things to keep honest: autophagy and the ubiquitin-proteasome system are complementary, not interchangeable (one handles bulky cargo and organelles, the other single tagged proteins), and although the name sounds like self-destruction, normal autophagy is mostly a recycling and renewal program, not the cell killing itself.

Starve a cell of nutrients and within minutes it ramps up autophagy: membranes wrap up bits of its own cytoplasm, deliver them to lysosomes for digestion, and the freed amino acids feed emergency protein synthesis — the cell quite literally eats parts of itself to stay alive until food returns.

Autophagy is normally a recycling and renewal program, not cell suicide, despite the alarming name. It complements the proteasome by clearing the bulky cargo — aggregates and organelles — that the proteasome cannot handle.
