Attention & workload BCI

A passive BCI that reads a user's attentional or mental-workload state to adapt a task, interface, or alert system, without the user issuing an explicit command. Applications include vigilance monitoring for drivers and operators, adaptive automation that offloads work when load is high, and neurofeedback for attention training. Common correlates are frontal-midline theta and parietal alpha for engagement and load, pupillometry and EEG for arousal, and the P300 for attentional allocation.

As a frontier, this is where BCI most directly meets everyday, out-of-the-lab use, and therefore where ecological validity and evidence standards bite hardest: laboratory workload indices often degrade under motion, individual differences, and real-task complexity, and commercial attention-monitoring claims frequently outrun their validation.

Passive workload monitoring is closer to product than most cognitive BCI, which makes rigorous, adversarial evaluation more important rather than less — a driver-alertness monitor that fails silently under real conditions is worse than none.
