the ASTM grain-size number
Engineers needed a single, quick, comparable number for how fine the grains are, so a standards body (ASTM, in standard E112) defined one. The ASTM grain-size number, usually written G (or n), is a tidy integer: small G means coarse grains, large G means fine grains. Because it is standardized, saying a steel is G = 7 means the same thing in any lab worldwide.
The definition is a counting rule. Look at the microstructure at 100x magnification and count how many grains fall in one square inch of the image; call that N. The number G satisfies N = 2^(G-1). So G = 1 gives 1 grain per square inch at 100x, G = 2 gives 2, G = 3 gives 4, and each step up doubles the grain count per area — which means each step up halves the area of a grain and shrinks its diameter by a factor of sqrt(2). The scale is logarithmic, so a modest-looking change in G is a large change in actual grain size: from G = 4 to G = 10 the grains are 2^6 = 64 times smaller in area.
G is popular because it is fast (compare against standard chart images), dimensionless, directly comparable between materials and labs, and it feeds straight into strength estimates. Honest cautions: the formula is tied to that specific 100x convention, so you must correct if you image at another magnification; G assumes reasonably equiaxed, uniform grains and becomes ambiguous for very elongated or bimodal structures; and being logarithmic, it hides the actual spread of sizes. It is a convenient index, not a physical length.
A sample shows 64 grains in a square inch at 100x. Then N = 64 = 2^(G-1), so G - 1 = 6 and G = 7. Refine the heat treatment until you count 256 grains in the same field and G rises to 9 — the grains now have one-quarter the area and half the diameter.
Doubling the ASTM number four times (G up by 4) means 16x more grains and 4x smaller grain diameter.
A bigger ASTM number means smaller grains — the sign trips up beginners. And G is defined at 100x magnification; a grain count taken at another magnification must be converted before it means anything.
