aortic aneurysm
Think of a worn spot on an old bicycle tire that slowly balloons outward under pressure. An aortic aneurysm is a similar weakening and bulging of the aorta, the body's largest artery, where part of the wall stretches into an abnormal dilation. Because the aorta carries the full force of every heartbeat, that thinned, overstretched patch is at risk of tearing or bursting.
Aneurysms are usually described by location: the thoracic aorta in the chest or the abdominal aorta in the belly, the latter being the more common site. They tend to grow slowly over years and frequently cause no symptoms, so many are discovered incidentally on imaging done for other reasons. The risk of rupture rises sharply as the diameter increases.
Key risk factors include aging, smoking, hypertension, atherosclerosis, and inherited connective-tissue conditions such as Marfan syndrome. Management hinges on size and growth rate: small aneurysms are watched with periodic imaging and risk-factor control, while those that reach a threshold diameter or enlarge quickly are repaired by surgery or a stent-graft placed from within the vessel.
An aneurysm is a bulge in the wall; an aortic dissection is a tear within the wall layers. They are distinct problems, though both relate to a damaged aorta and can occasionally coexist.
