anxiolytic

An anxiolytic is any drug whose job is to reduce anxiety — the racing thoughts, tension, and dread that can dominate disorders like generalized anxiety or panic. Some anxiolytics work like an emergency brake for sudden anxiety, while others work more like slow recalibration that takes weeks to settle the system.

The term describes a function rather than a single mechanism, so it spans several drug groups. Benzodiazepines act fast by boosting GABA inhibition and are useful for acute, short-term relief. SSRIs and SNRIs, though usually called antidepressants, are the mainstay for long-term anxiety treatment. Buspirone, a partial agonist at serotonin 5-HT1A receptors, is a non-sedating anxiolytic, and beta-blockers can blunt the physical signs of performance anxiety like tremor and palpitations.

Because these options differ so much in onset, dependence risk, and side effects, the choice depends on whether anxiety is occasional and acute or chronic and ongoing.

The main trap is over-reliance on fast-acting benzodiazepines, which can produce tolerance, dependence, and withdrawal with regular use — so for sustained anxiety, slower but safer serotonergic agents are generally preferred.

For ongoing generalized anxiety disorder, a clinician prefers an SSRI for maintenance and reserves a benzodiazepine only for brief bridging during severe flare-ups.

Matching the drug's speed and dependence risk to the clinical course is key.

Note the seeming paradox that SSRIs treat anxiety yet can briefly worsen it in the first week or two — starting low and going slow helps patients get past that early jitteriness.
