Antiaromaticity is the unwelcome twin of aromaticity. Where an aromatic ring is rewarded with extra stability, an antiaromatic ring is actively penalized: its particular looped arrangement of pi electrons makes it less stable than a comparable non-cyclic system, not more. It is not just the absence of the aromatic bonus; it is a genuine destabilization, like a chord that sounds jarringly wrong rather than merely neutral.
An antiaromatic system is a ring that is cyclic, planar, and fully conjugated, just like an aromatic one, but that carries 4n pi electrons (the counts 4, 8, 12) instead of 4n+2. Molecular orbital theory explains the harm: filling the pi orbitals of such a ring leaves two electrons sitting alone in two equal-energy, non-bonding-or-higher orbitals, an open-shell, high-energy situation rather than the snug closed shell of an aromatic ring. The classic example is cyclobutadiene, a four-membered ring with four pi electrons (4n, n=1), which is so destabilized that it is extraordinarily reactive and survives only fleetingly.
Because antiaromaticity is so costly, real molecules go to great lengths to avoid it. Cyclooctatetraene, with eight pi electrons (4n, n=2), would be antiaromatic if it stayed flat, so it instead buckles into a non-planar tub shape, breaking conjugation and escaping the penalty as a harmless nonaromatic polyene. Recognizing potential antiaromaticity helps you predict when a molecule will distort, react fast, or simply refuse to form. It is the sharp contrast that makes the meaning of aromaticity precise.
Cyclobutadiene (4 pi electrons) is the textbook antiaromatic molecule; it is so unstable that chemists can only trap it at very low temperatures inside a cage-like host.
A 4n electron count in a flat conjugated ring spells trouble, not stability.
Antiaromaticity strictly applies only to rings that are forced to stay planar; if a 4n ring can pucker to avoid planarity, it usually does and becomes merely nonaromatic, sidestepping the penalty rather than suffering it.
