Think of a small permanent repair crew kept on site at a large building — not the original construction team, but a standing workforce that patches wear and replaces broken parts for as long as the building stands. Adult stem cells are that on-site repair crew inside your tissues: rare cells that remain throughout life to maintain and mend the tissue they live in.
Precisely, adult (somatic) stem cells are undifferentiated cells found among the specialized cells of a mature tissue. They are usually multipotent, able to make the cell types of their own tissue but not others, and they are generally quiet (slow-dividing) until repair or routine renewal is needed. Examples include blood stem cells in bone marrow, stem cells in the skin and gut lining, and muscle satellite cells that rebuild damaged muscle.
Adult stem cells matter because they are the reason many tissues heal at all, and several are already used in standard, proven therapies — bone-marrow and cord-blood transplants being the clearest. But honesty is important here: their potency is limited, they can be hard to find and grow, and not every tissue has effective ones (the adult heart and brain renew poorly). Many advertised 'adult stem cell cures' for unrelated conditions are unproven and sometimes outright scams.
