active pharmaceutical ingredient

The active pharmaceutical ingredient, or API, is the part of a pill that actually does the healing. A tablet is mostly filler, binder, and coating; the API is the small fraction of pure drug substance hidden inside that the rest is built to deliver.

Formally, it is the biologically active chemical component of a medicine responsible for its therapeutic effect. The non-active substances mixed with it, called excipients, give the medicine its shape, stability, taste, and dissolution behavior but have no therapeutic action of their own.

The API must be made to high, consistent purity, because impurities can be toxic or reduce effectiveness, and its solid form must stay stable in storage. Manufacturing the API at scale under strict quality rules is the job of process chemists and is governed by good manufacturing practice.
